The Success Academy Charter was founded in 2006. It is now the highest-performing free and public charter in the city of New York. The admission is open for all children of the state of New York. The admission also includes the children that have special needs and also the English learning students. It also helps the students that are from low-incoming households. Children of color also get to benefit from this organization. The students are admitted randomly using a lottery every April. This academy operates in 41 schools and serves a total of 14,000 students in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Bronx, and Queens. The organization has been able to work with better independence than the zoned schools. They are usually held accountable for the performance of the students by the state.
The Success Academy network has significantly grown in just a decade. In these ten years, it has been able to move from one school to now 41 schools in the country. This has made it even larger than the 95 percent of all the schools across the country. It is now receiving about 17,000 applicants this year. However, the students that can be accommodated are only 3,017. There is a strong desire for the parents to enroll their children in the Success Academy. Most of the parents claim to like the charter organization and how it is helping numerous students.
The teaching in the Success Academy organization is scrutinized heavily. Most of the teachers in the charter are the recent college graduates. They are usually asked to give their best to the students. They regularly work for 11 hours each day. There are also teachers who are employed to work part-time. They claim to do so as to get the best out of each student. The turnover of the teachers who keep applying for this programs has substantially increased over the years. Each year, there is an increase in the number of applicants who are hoping to work and help these students.
In 2017, the Success Academy won the prestigious 250 thousand dollars Broad Prize. It won this prize because of its success in boosting academic performance. It has also been able to close the achievement gaps for the children of color and the also the low-income children. It was presented to them in Washington, D.C. at the National Charter Schools Conference. This prize is usually given each year to the organizations of charter management.
